NASE Member Profile: Building On A Dream

Monday, July 12, 2010

Brian Brophy has been an NASE Member for five years. He owns New Creation Construction in Lockeford, Calif. His website is newcreationconstruction.us.

Tell us about New Creation Construction.

I’m a contractor who does residential construction. I started my own business seven years ago and have four employees. We do remodeling, decks, door and window replacement, foundation work and much more.

I’ve been in construction since I was 23, and I’m 43 now. So that’s 20 years. And I’ve done all different facets of construction from residential to commercial.

Starting my business was the most difficult decision I’d ever made. I have three kids and a beautiful wife. We had just purchased a new house. Going out on my own was the most challenging and also the most rewarding endeavor. I’m a hard worker. I’m organized and disciplined. I know I can’t do everything and have to delegate. It all ties into being a good business owner.

Why did you decide to become a certified green building professional two years ago?

I saw the demand coming. I’m concerned about the environment and the structures I build. With green building, you’re saving energy and you’re conserving materials. It’s good for the environment and it’s good for clients.

How do you market your business?

Through good work and referrals. I used to advertise in the Yellow Pages, but it didn’t work. I think the ways of doing business are changing. So, I send thank-you letters to customers. And as an incentive for a referral, I offer a $25 check. I get a lot of word-of-mouth business.

How has the NASE helped your business?

The NASE has played a significant role in the success of my business. It has been the greatest asset for me.

Gene Fairbrother, the ShopTalk 800 consultant, has shared so much knowledge with me. He’s been helping me for three years. He’s helped with the growth of my business and has helped me with day-to-day decision making like hiring employees. I want to pay off some business debt, and Gene is helping me find ways to cut back so I can do that. I would really like to meet him and shake his hand and say thanks.

I get great ideas from every issue of Self-Employed magazine. I also received a $5,000 NASE Business Development Grant in 2007, which helped me build my website and purchase tools. I travel, and the NASE has discounts for hotels and rental cars.

What do you like most about being self-employed?

I get to make my own schedule. That means I can spend the time I want with my family. And my family is my No. 1 priority.

What kind of construction project do you enjoy most?

I like any project that’s challenging. My biggest asset is creativity. My greatest reward is solving a challenge for a client.
