Senators Unveil Startup Act

U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) introduced The Startup Act to help budding entrepreneurs. The bill outlines a five-prong approach to job creation based on: 1) reducing regulatory burdens; 2) attracting business investment; 3) accelerating the commercialization of university research; 4) attracting and retaining entrepreneurial talent; and 5) encouraging pro-growth state and local policies.

Update: Payroll Tax Debate

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, brought forth a Republican version of the payroll tax cut extension, which would extend certain unemployment benefits and prevent cuts to Medicare physicians. The bill would also give the green light to the Keystone XL pipeline, which is contentious.

Small Biz R & D Programs Up For Vote

An eight year SBIR/STTR reauthorization heads to the House on the National Defense Authorization Bill. Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Ranking Member Olympia Snowe of Maine had the following to say:

“The SBIR and STTR programs have been front and center in improving our nation’s capacity to innovate, and SBIR-backed firms have been responsible for roughly 25 percent of the nation’s most crucial innovations over the past decade, including countless technologies that make our nation’s military more efficient, effective, and safer. Long-term reauthorization of these programs will provide certainty and stability so that our nation’s small businesses have undisturbed access to this critical seed funding.”
