You’ve Got Mail

Oct 21, 2009
Posted by Maureen Petron -- In a conversation with my older brother yesterday, he said he used his mobile phone to make phone calls. Period. He didn’t get e-mail, didn’t use a calendar, didn’t text.

I told him I didn’t understand the words coming out of his mouth. No texting??? How did he survive?

Unlike my brother, my reaction solidly places me with the 42% of 18 to 34 year-olds and 33% of 35 to 44 year-olds who would likely opt-in to mobile alerts from their favorite establishments.

That figure is from Placecast, who together with Harris Interactive, polled Americans on location-based shopping.

The survey focused on mostly retail businesses like shopping, restaurants and entertainment, but it’s a good poll for all small businesses to consider. I opt-in to texts of status updates from friends on Facebook and Twitter, but I also subscribe to alerts on the weather, some blog feeds and notifications from local restaurants. I love that some marathon and other race organizers will text the status of a runner to bystanders that subscribe – it’s a great way to keep track of a friend and be at the right spot to cheer them on!

Has your small business considered mobile alerts? Do you send them? If so, what service do you use to send out the text messages to followers?
