Congress In Recess Until Sept. 10th

Aug 08, 2012

Posted by Katie Vlietstra - The Senate and House formally adjourned for the August District Work Period on August 7th, the month long work period is long-held tradition, going back to the days of when travel to and from was not as convenient as it is today.

When Congress returns in September, they have a massive amount of work to address prior to the election recess, which is traditionally the entire month of October through the November election.  First up, both chambers will need to agree to a six-month funding of the federal government, pushing it past the election and to the next Congress and perhaps the biggest lift for both chambers, tax extension.  The Democrats and Republicans are at opposite ends of the spectrum, Democrats calling for an extension for those making $250,000 or less and Republicans pushing for a one-year extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.  This will be a very difficult battle and an outcome before the November election is unlikely.
