Kansas Gov. Sebelius Confirmed for HHS Post

May 01, 2009
Posted by Molly Nelson - The Senate filled the last vacancy in Present Obama’s Cabinet on Tuesday by voting to confirm Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Sebelius, a Democrat, was confirmed by a vote of 65-31.

As HHS Secretary, Sebelius will oversee the government’s largest health programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and control a budget of over $600 billion. Soon after being sworn in, Sebelius was already at work helping with the government's response to the swine flu outbreak. Sebelius will also be spearheading the President's plan for health care reform, including expanding coverage to the approximately 46 million currently uninsured Americans.
