Heard Around The Water Cooler

Posted by Maureen Petron -- Have you clicked on the “Water Cooler” tab in the navigation yet?

Why not? You’re missing out on a great opportunity to promote your products and services to other NASE Members, network, and support fellow micro-business owners.

Similar to other social networks like Facebook or LinkedIn that you may already be familiar with, the Water Cooler is a community made by and for NASE Members. It’s a place where you can come to advertise your business to other NASE Members, find a fellow NASE Member in your area whose design (or plumbing or photography) skills you need or simply ask questions and bounce ideas off of other small business owners.

With over 200 users on the Water Cooler now, we have a great cross-section of the membership --albeit, admittedly heavy in the “Michael’s” and accountants!

A few members have started or imported their blogs, like Keith, Sherry, Katrina, and Bryan. They write about their businesses, their inspiration, their tips and their questions. You should check them out.

There are also groups formed by geographic location (such as Austin, Oklahoma City and Washington, DC), by profession (like this one for accountants) and to offer special deals to NASE Members for your products and services.

Don’t miss this opportunity to network with your fellow micro-business owners. Visit the NASE Water Cooler, and login in the upper right hand corner with your NASE Web account. Introduce yourself, and start promoting your business.

Meet the NASE Staff Bloggers

Kristin Oberlander
- In public affairs, my job is to serve as a link between the association, micro-businesses and the media. When I have down time, I enjoy drinking large quantities of coffee, contemplating how I will cram one more pair of (un)needed shoes into my closet and finding creative ways to remove my dog’s hair from my clothes, car, own hair and food. My biggest pet peeve is drivers who don’t understand 4-way stops.

Katie Vlietstra - As Director of Government Affairs, I work to explain how actions on Capitol Hill can impact the self-employed. I love D.C. and have made my home in Capitol Hill, where I live with my fiancé and black Labrador, Coltrane. We love playing volleyball and softball on the National Mall.

- I help out with the NASE’s legislative advocacy, communications, and public relations. From attending hearings on the Hill to helping select the cover design for the member magazine, I’ve always got something new going on. I like practicing yoga, running through different parts of the city, and I’m an admitted etymology/grammar nerd.

Kristie Arslan
- As President, one of my chief roles is to educate legislators and the media on how key issues such as health care, tax, and the lagging economy affect the self-employed. When I am not speaking out for our members, I spend my time helping my husband with his small business.
