Supreme Court To Hear Health Law Challenges

The Supreme Court announced that it would consider the legal challenges to President Obama’s health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act. The court is expected to rule on these for issues:

  • The constitutionality of an individual mandate;
  • The ability of the individual mandate to be deemed a separate issue from the law;
  • The expansion of Medicaid and the associated states' rights therein;
  • The penalties associated with the individual mandate and at what point they can be assessed.

Senate Clears Withholding Repeal

The Senate approved a bill to repeal a withholding law for independent contractors. That bill had a veterans hiring bill attached to it as well. The House is expected to pass the bill and send it to President Obama for a signature.

Congress Furthers FY2012 Bill

The 2012 fiscal year started on October 1 and Congress continues to make progress on closing out their appropriations. Recently, a three-bill proposal was expected to sail through leaders from both parties; however, it stumbled in the House and on the Senate floor.
