A day before the Obamacare health exchanges go online, more than half of those who work for themselves aren’t sure whether they’ll use them to purchase medical coverage, according to a survey from the National Association of the Self-Employed.

The group says 54% of 476 self-employed individuals surveyed have yet to decide whether they will use the exchanges, while 64% have yet to visit the government’s clearinghouse for finding online coverage, the web site www.HealthCare.gov.

“Just a day away from open enrollment, our membership — like millions of Americans — are frankly unsure how the new law will impact them or how to even approach the new system,” Katie Vlietstra, NASE’s director of government affairs.

NASE also notes that two-thirds of those surveyed expect to pay more for health care in 2014. And all say pricing will be the determining factor in whether people sign up for health care.

The membership survey was conducted online Sept. 18-28.

There are roughly 23 million self-employed and so-called “micro” businesses nationwide, the group says. NASE says more information for the self-employed can be found on its web site.
