While Washington Politicians Bicker on the Fiscal Cliff, Small Businesses Move Closer to the Brink

With No Deal, Self-Employed Face $2,700 to $3,700 in Higher Taxes
Washington, D.C., December 11, 2012 – Citing her growing frustration with the inability of both Congress and the Obama Administration to come to an agreement on how to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff before Dec. 31, Kristie Arslan, CEO of the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), called on both sides to have a “reality check” and realize the impact of their brinksmanship and political posturing on America’s small businesses.
“Congress and the administration appear to be completely oblivious to how ineffective they appear to the American people right now,” Arslan said. “If they can’t come to an agreement on the impending fiscal cliff, America’s small businesses are going to pay thousands of dollars in higher taxes, the sluggish economy could slip back into a recession, and more Americans will to lose their jobs as a result of their inability to put the country ahead of scoring political points.”
Arslan cited analysis by the NASE, which speaks out for the 22 million self-employed Americans, showing that self-employed individuals making between $60,000 and $88,000 a year would see a tax hit of $2,700 to $3,700 per year if a debt deal isn't reached.
“This is not the time to play politics with America’s economic future. Lawmakers need to come to the table, negotiate and come to a reasonable compromise. Millions of small business owners make the tough decisions for their business every day. Why can’t our elected officials do the same?”
