NASE Statement on House Health Care Vote

Small Business Community Supports Flexibility, Transparency and Options to Incentivize, Not Penalize, Health Care Coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the House of Representatives votes on the American Health Care Act, Katie Vlietstra, Vice President of Public Affairs and Government Relations for the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), the nation's leading resource for the self-employed and micro-businesses, released the following statement:

“Although millions of American entrepreneurs and small business owners currently have health care, skyrocketing premiums and shrinking choices in the marketplace endanger future coverage.  Congress must address these shortfalls and we have a long road ahead in achieving quality, affordable health care for all Americans. We must not repeal this crucial overage without an acceptable replacement plan that ensures continual coverage for so many Americans and small businesses.

“There are real opportunities to create a health care system that is flexible, transparent and offers options for the American people. If we are to employ a large and healthy workforce, we will need a strong health care system that focuses on providing quality health care, not just health insurance. A robust health care plan should include principals that preserve key safeguards, such as the prohibition on the ban on pre-existing conditions to ensuring coverage to age 26 and lifetime coverage caps.

“At the same time, we need a health care system that incentivizes individuals to purchase health care coverage, not penalizing them for not. Whether it’s tax credits or increased Health Savings Account limits, incentivizing health care fosters morale and inspires millions of the American public to support a health care plan that works for them.

“We look forward to continuing to work with both Congress and the Trump Administration to ensure a health care system emerges that embodies the ideals important to all Americans.”
