Move Would Protect Access to Affordable Retirement Advice, Ensure Retirement Advisors Serve Best Interests of Clients

WASHINGTON, D.C.Katie Vlietstra, Vice President of Public Affairs and Government Relations for the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), the nation's leading resource for the self-employed and micro-businesses, today applauded an effort by Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN), member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax Policy, to overturn the Obama Administration’s Fiduciary Rule.

“We applaud Rep. Roe and Chairman Roskam for putting the interests of the American small business community ahead of federal red tape by introducing a measure that would overturn the burdensome fiduciary rule. A one size fits all regulation, just results in increased costs for our smallest businesses. In order to have a strong and healthy workforce, we need a small business community that can flourish and strengthen our economy. Superfluous rules like these are simply a barrier to economic growth.

“While we were disappointed that the Trump Administration moved forward with implementing this rule, it is our hope that Congress works together with the Administration to ensure all American businesses remain strong.”

The legislators have introduced the Affordable Retirement Advice for Savers Act (H.R. 2823), which would protect access to affordable retirement advice by overturning the fiduciary rule while ensuring retirement advisors serve the best interests of their clients.

Vlietstra responded to a New York Times editorial in February on this topic.
