Small Business Saturday

Despite Rising Healthcare Costs, Ambivalence of Tax Reform and Stretched Bottom Lines, Small Businesses Continue to Fuel Local and National Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Small Business Saturday being celebrated this Saturday, November 30, 2019, Keith Hall, NASE President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE) today offered the following comments applauding the entrepreneurial spirit of America’s small businesses across the country.

“Millions of small business owners from every corner of our country will take part in Small Business Saturday while they continue to fear rising healthcare costs, ambivalence of the recent tax reform law, and stretched bottom lines. But despite these challenges, small business owners continue to work hard every day along Main Street to deliver their goods and services to their customers while growing and expanding their operations.

“We encourage all Americans to shop at their local small business this Saturday, showing their support with their pocketbooks, signaling their appreciation for these businesses that help fuel not only our local economy, but also our national economy.”

America’s small businesses struggle to compete on an equal playing field with their corporate counterparts each and every day. In a recent poll, 60 percent of small businesses indicated that regulations (labor, healthcare and tax) have negatively impacted their business operations. As well, during the current healthcare open enrollment period, which closes on December 15, 2019, there are changes and updates that may affect the bottom lines of many small businesses during the 2020 healthcare season.

Despite these challenges, small businesses continue to be optimistic about the current economy, according to the poll above where 70 percent of small businesses signaled their support.  According to Everlance, the explosion of gig economy workers – like Uber and Lyft – are part of a growing self-employed demographic, which now represent a whopping 33 percent of the economy. By the year 2020, it is expected that 42 million Americans will be self-employed and/or freelancers.

“We look forward to working with both the Trump Administration and Congress to ensure America’s small businesses are treated fair, get the resources they need, and are supported by our lawmakers,” concluded Hall.
