Supreme Court Decision Does Not Alleviate Concerns For The Self-Employed

NASE Focusing On Implementation Of The Law

Washington, D.C., June 28, 2012 – After much anticipation, the U.S. Supreme Court has reached a decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act in its entirety. The NASE continues to maintain its original concern that the health care law does little to address the affordability of coverage for America’s largest employment sector, the self-employed. Cost remains a top barrier for the self-employed and micro-businesses (10 or fewer employees) looking to protect themselves and their families.

“Now that the law has been upheld, small-business owners remain concerned about the impact of its implementation, especially as it relates to the establishment of Exchanges and regulations around essential health benefits, the minimum allowable coverage a citizen will be required to purchase,” said NASE President Kristie L. Arslan. “The NASE will continue to work with the Department of Health and Human Services and State Insurance Commissioners to ensure that the needs and concerns of the self-employed are at the forefront of those tasked with implementing the remaining components of the law.”

Health care coverage is important to the self-employed – over 77 percent of them currently have coverage, the highest percentage on record. The individual mandate is set to kick in starting in 2014, which means that the self-employed will be required to purchase both more expansive and more expensive coverage.

“The NASE will continue to urge Congress to move forward with improving the nation’s health care system and to make changes to the law in hopes that one of the strongest drivers of the American economy- small business- receives some cost relief on health care expenditures,” said Arslan.
