New Health Care Reform Law Hurts Small Businesses
From Rising Costs to Incomplete and Missing Information, NASE Highlights How America’s Small Businesses Will Be Impacted
WASHINGTON, DC – As the House Committee on Ways and Means holds a hearing on the status of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) implementation, Katie Vlietstra, Director of Government Affairs for The National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), the nation’s leading resource and advocate for the self-employed and micro-businesses, today offered the following comments:
“As the largest segment of the small business community, America’s self-employed will see their health care costs rise significantly when our nation’s new health care system launches. This in turn will have both an immediate and negative impact upon 22 million self-employed Americans, their families, and their businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our national economy and shouldering them with burdensome costs will also have a ripple effect throughout our overall economy.
“Throughout this process, we continue to receive little or incomplete information about how the Exchanges will operate, its requirements and actual costs of health care coverage. Small businesses need adequate time to review these important details to budget accordingly. Furthermore, the Administration’s decision to delay the employer-mandate requirement for one-year simply illustrates the inequity faced by America’s 22 million self-employed and micro-businesses.”
The NASE recently released the Affordable Care Act in Brief highlighting the impact of the new law on America’s smallest businesses. It outlines the pros and cons of health care coverage small businesses must consider while underlining the lack of information in the public domain about the health care law, the Exchanges and details of enrollment requirements. In addition, the NASE submitted a letter signed by them and other small business groups to the U.S. House of Representatives supporting a delay in the individual mandate penalty.
