Tell us about your business.
I
am a voice-over actor who narrates and writes commercial spots, video
scripts, online material and phone mail system greetings . . . it runs
the gamut! Occasionally, I have given a speech before live audiences.
Narrating audio books is my next challenge.
The Definitive
Enterprises, LLC is the umbrella organization covering The Definitive
Voice and Word. I am the founder and CEO of this emerging organization,
which was established in 2007. I have compiled my 20 years of
experience in the business to make The Definitive Voice and Word what
it is today.
How did you get interested in voice work?
After
graduating from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., I experimented with
various stints in radio news. Although I earned multiple national
awards in the field, I decided to dive into my dream career of using my
“pipes,” or natural voice talent, to help others achieve their goals.
Even to this day, my colleagues and clients comment that my voice is
warm, rich, crystal clear, engaging and inviting, not to mention they
also say I have excellent enunciation.
What types of clients do you serve?
I
enjoy the diversity of my clients: business people who need a spot
written and voiced; online educational webmasters who want narration
for a site tour; military contractors who need my narration of
important instructions; companies that want a professional and
welcoming voice mail greeting. I also instruct voice and copywriting at
CSB Broadcasting School in the D.C. area.
In addition to my
voice-over projects, I have been invited to serve as the senior editor
of a dynamic e-newsletter, VoiceOverXtra.com. This e-publication is the
voice-over industry’s online news and education resource center where
readers can explore their opportunities.
How does the NASE help your business?
Resources
are offered that help folks like me feel supported and not so isolated.
ShopTalk 800 is of interest to me as well as business-related
discounts. Of course, Self-Employed magazine has interesting and
helpful articles.
What’s the toughest challenge for you right now?
One challenge is reaching out to prospective clients so they understand how my talents can help their businesses.
Do you take precautions to protect your voice?
Definitely.
I drink warm water or semi-hot beverages, such as tea with some honey,
to keep my throat warmed up. I practice voice exercises. And I avoid
close contact with people who are sick and contagious.
What’s the coolest thing about running a voice service?
The
projects aren’t always the same, so there is never a dull moment. The
best part is getting positive feedback from happy clients, which
results in repeat business!
