Alan DeValerio, founder of White House Memories, started his business in 2012 after working as a butler at the White House in Washington, D.C. from 1980 to 1989.  After entering retirement, DeValerio started his business to tell his behind-the-scenes stories about entertaining at the White House and how the process has evolved since FDR to the present.  Not only does DeValerio relate his firsthand experiences with history, but also relays stories he’s heard from those who have been taking care of our country’s First Families ever since FDR’s Administration.

“We congratulate Alan DeValerio and White House Memories on being selected as this month’s featured cover story in our national Self-Informed Magazine,” said John Hearrell, Vice President of Membership and Affiliate Programs.  “As the nation’s leading advocate for the self-employed and business with less than 10 employees, it is important for us to highlight members who are on the ground doing the hard work of realizing their dream of being an entrepreneur.”

As part of the magazine’s cover story, DeValerio was asked, “What inspired him to start his own business?”

“When President Obama was elected in 2008, there was an article in the Washington Post about former Head Butler and Maitre d’ Eugene Allen and his 34 years of service at the White House. Gene was my boss and his story really caught on. You might recall the movie The Butler; it was made about Gene’s life. As I began to enter my retirement years, I was thinking of how I wanted to continue to work and I thought that people might be interested in my story as well,” said Alan DeValerio, founder of White House Memories and White House butler from 1980 to 1989.

DeValerio was asked additionally, “What is the best thing about being self-employed?”

“The independence and the ability to call all your own shots. As a semi-retired individual, the flexibility in my schedule is almost priceless,” DeValerio continued.

However, he warned future entrepreneurs to, “Make sure that there is a market for what you intend to do before investing too heavily in your time and money. Understand what the start-up costs will be first before moving forward. Take advantage of any tax breaks meant to help the self-employed.”
