The National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE) commends the introduction of the Small Business “Cooperative for Healthcare Options to Improve Coverage for Employees Act of 2009” (Small Business “CHOICE” Act). The bi-partisan health care legislation would increase access to comprehensive health insurance and help alleviate the instability of insurance premium costs.

In the first legislative success during his short tenure in office, the U.S. House of Representatives approved President Barack Obama’s sweeping economic stimulus plan, largely along party lines. The bill, the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009 (H.R. 1), includes $524 billion in spending and $275 billion in tax cuts, among other expenditures.

The NASE has long been a fervent supporter of federal small-business programs that have a proven track record of efficiently aiding the self-employed and micro-businesses, such as the SBA Office of Advocacy, the Small Business Development Centers, and SCORE. With a new administration about to take office, there is opportunity to improve and expand current small business federal programs.
